Tuesday Tune: "When U Love Somebody" by The Fruit Bats

For a song with minimal lyrics, "When U Love Somebody" sure has a lot to say.

Baby, remember on the bus and my hand was on your knee?
When U love somebody,

it's hard to think about anything but to breathe.
Baby, I am the cub who was washed out in the flood.
When U love somebody,

bite your tongue, all you get is a mouthful of blood.

That's it.  That's what you get with The Fruit Bats on the single off their 2003 Mouthfuls album.  It may not be enough for everybody, but from where I sit, it's just the right amount of words.

Set against a sunny tune--which, with its handclaps and guitar-strum reminds me of "Stuck in the Middle With You" by Stealers Wheel--the lyrics speak to the kind of all-encompassing devotion to your lover that has you reluctant to say anything negative which will upset the balance.  So, you bite your tongue and flood your mouth with blood.

This amateur music vid, made by someone called "angrybeaver1248" on YouTube, is actually quite charming in its literal earnestness.

And yes, consider this your pre-game warm-up for Valentine's Day.
